When the change came, and your ancestors found themselves much weaker than before, they started to find that they no longer had the strength that is needed to swing a heavy hammer and smash rocks to pieces. This became a big problem since they could no longer perform their duties in the mines. The curse came from the gods, and so did the solution. The ancestors found that by turning the mind inwards, and focusing on the faith in their gods, they could regain some of their lost strength long enough to focus it into their blows.
